Volos_Group 2_Day 11_Dark

Hello! We are Nick Georgiadis and Paraskevi Vousoureli and we are undergraduate students from Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece. Our experiment was conducted in 21/03/2016 at Anauros beach in Volos (Greece) and we are presenting our first results from the Winogradsky column.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 egg
  • pieces of newspaper
  • 1 plastic bottle (1,5lt)
  • mud from the beach
  • sea water
2/3 of our bottle contain mud mixed with one egg and some newspaper pieces and the rest of the bottle is filled with sea water.

21/03/2016

the first day of our experiment we noticed a light yellow colour in the water because of the enriched material, particularly egg.The odor it was not intense.

24/03/2016

on the third day the water became more white and a white line created between the water and the sediment and some bubbles appeared on the surface of the bottle, which may be due to oxygen trapped.

31/03/2016
finally the tenth day the white colour was remained and we also noticed tha the sediment became darker due to the presence of organic material (egg) and the accumulation of by-products of metabolism and the odor may indicate the existence of hydrogen sulfide in the column.

if we notice something new we let you know with a new post.
